Studies of making the digital more natural
This is a research about the handling and use of digital devices and the great possibilities they offer. Videochatting was the specific subject. Because even though it is simply amazing to be able to see and hear someone who is somewhere else, we tend not to like to use it.

This project is an experiment with the aim to make video chatting with your loved ones more comfortable.
Details
The medium has great importance. A tablet or a smartphone are multifunctional devices. I needed a medium which has just that one purpose; video chatting, to prevent the user of getting distracted as well as making it as easy and fast as possible to interact with it. The frame has an additional symbolic value as we frame pictures of something we honour.

One interacts with the device through voice control. You have to say a password, like a spell, to start the video chat with the other frame. When it is not used, the device shows pictures of the owner of the other frame, all moving a little.
A lot of display experiments followed which are explained in the ongoing.

This project was made during the 3rd semester.
Software used: Adobe Ps, Id, Ae, Pr, Processing 3
Material: pear wood

Display Experiments

Warmth

A display has always a cold, unnatural aura. The goal was to change that feeling into something familiar and warm, like an old photograph, something you really enjoy looking at.

Analogue & digital

I did experiments with different materials which functioned as analogue filters. I used fabric, plastics and paper. The last had the best outcome but some of the fabrics had interesting effects, too.
I also programmed some digital filter and put them on photos and movies.

Decision for the time being

When I had to finish the project I chose one of the digital filters for the final result since I did not find the perfect material for an analogue solution yet.

Together with the frame the display feeling was gone. People really considered it a photograph until the picture moved.
